U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condolezza Rice say that despite growing sectarian violence in Iraq, the creation of a stable government is moving ahead just fine. This is on March 9th in testimony before Congress.
Meanwhile, back on planet earth, Rice's own State Department released a report March 8th which states :
“Additionally, the misappropriation of official authority by groups – paramilitary, sectarian, criminal, terrorist and insurgent – resulted in numerous and severe crimes and abuses,”So apparently Rice didn't read the report that her department compiled and release before her testimony, or she was completely full of shit in her testimony.
and
“The vast majority of human rights abuses reportedly carried out by government agents were attributed to the police,”
and
“Large-scale financial, as well as political, personal corruption in the government remained a severe problem,”
There was at least one person in the room during this Congressional sharade with a grasp on reality - during Rice's opening statement a man stood up and yelled "How many of you have children in this illegal and immoral war? The blood is on your hands and you cannot wash it away."
Obviously being that the U.S. government doesn't answer to the people, he was escorted out of the building by security. On the way out he added "Fire Rumsfeld."
